Snake Charmer

by Brian Jude

So…
You imagine that you are in control,
Gloating in your proud sense of domination,
Believing you play upon my strings
Like an obedient mandolin;
One hand on my body,
The other around my neck
As I recline comfortably in your lap.

Oh yes, I will indeed sing for you,
With my richest timbre,
Perfect intonation,
And unfaltering melodies of enchantment.

You smile,
Masking your venal avarice-
You are satisfied.

But beware, gentle belladonna,
Soft-spoken asp!
For I am not unaware of your deceitful intentions!

The song I sing was penned by my own hand,
Written with you in mind,
Knowing the harmonies that seduce auditory nerves,
Following the rhythm of your palpitating black heart,
Enticing you to sway with sweet splendor,
And for once you are under my spell!

You will desire with incremental verve
The fruits of obsolete opportunities,
Finding that the tree is barren
In winter hibernation.
You must seek snow to quench your thirst-
Cold ice to nourish cold blood.
And you will tire from your travail,
Sleeping through my revival.

I am immune now to your venom.
